Spatial Green Garden
by Joana Schneider and Raphaël Emine
11 September — 9 October 2021
Sainte Anne Gallery invited two artists to present their work in dialogue for a new exhibition titled Spatial Green Garden. Joana Schneider’s Edelweiss, Liquid Cloud and Green Garden fill the space of the gallery with abstract landscapes. For the last three years Schneider took her main inspiration from the Northern Sea but her most recent works are inspired by an earthly oasis. The calm lines and repetition of her ‘fiber gardens’ resemble the architecture of traditional Japanese gardens. With over 30 000 stitches she and her team created intuitively circular organic forms that seem to have no beginning nor end. Schneider’s practice evolves towards seeking for balance and interspecies connection. For this exhibition, Raphaël Emine created Oasis, a series of enamelled ceramic vessels conceived for the space of the gallery. The installation forms a receptacle for plants and organisms to grow in echo with Joana Schneider’s abstract gardens. Raphaël’s sculptures invite us to decipher
the multitude of details of these microscopic architectures made for non humans: discrete enamels, micro-organisms altering the color of the water, lentils growing to fill « chambers », carnivorous plants eating the bugs attracted by this miniature oasis.
